Brushing Maintenance and Matted Hair
Wavy, curly, or straight hair can all become matted, but with proper dog grooming, this can be prevented. Healthy pet coats require love and attention, and effective pet brushing techniques are essential to ensure your dog's hair stays in great condition.

Sometimes, matted hair can be hard to see until it becomes a significant knot. These knots can be painful and irritating for your dog, making it difficult for oxygen to reach the affected area's skin and causing discomfort. By the time matting has developed, it is often too late for effective dog grooming in that area. Matting typically starts developing quickly behind the ears, between paw pads, under the legs, and around the neck.
At Bohemian Spaw, when it comes to matted hair care, we strive to keep your dog’s coat looking its best. However, some knots may be beyond the point of no return, necessitating a shave down to begin anew with a fresh coat. For knots located in less visible areas, such as under the legs or behind the ears, we can often cut them off without needing to shave down the entire dog.
You will be informed at drop-off if your dog has mats that require shaving. If we discover additional mats during the bathing process, we will contact you to explain the situation and the need for a shave. Cutting off matted hair is a meticulous process that puts extra wear on our grooming tools, and a fee of $10-$30 will be added to the grooming cost, depending on the size of your dog and the amount of work required. Additionally, you will be asked to sign a matted dog waiver, as the tightness of the hair against the skin may cause small nicks when using clippers. We do our best to minimize these by proceeding slowly.

If your pet has started to develop small amounts of matting. You can use a fine tooth metal comb and gently but firmly pull the mats out before they get worse.
