Dogs with Double Coats

Dogs with a double coat have a soft undercoat and a harsh topcoat that grow independently.  Undercoats grow much faster and require more maintenance.

Double Coats | How do they work?

Double coats are two separate layers in your dogs hair that grow independently and serve different purposes. 


Undercoat

A properly groomed and maintained undercoat have the following benefits:

  • Release body heat that will otherwise be trapped that can cause overheating. 
  • Repel moisture and dry faster.
  • Free from debris and dirt that can get trapped. 
  • Reduced risk of pest infestation. 
  • Allows for shedding hair to fall from the body instead of getting trapped in the coat causing higher body temperature. 


Undercoats grow fast and shed twice a year for most breed. Dogs with these types of coats should never be shaved. If done, it may take up to two years to fully regrow.

Bath & Tidy-Up | De-Shedding Heavy

Double coats require that extra step for a beautiful healthy coat. In addition to the bathing and trim, we also upgrade the shampoo to an all natural shed reducing shampoo. Your dog will also get two 15 minute deshedding brushing sessions to remove the most hair possible.

Off Schedule Premium

starting at $15

Dogs that are booked 12 weeks or more in between grooming will incur an off schedule premium due to higher labor time and difficult behavior. ***Pricing depending on coat condition. 

Please note: The grooming rates are typical but your price might be slightly higher or lower depending upon the work needed, coat condition or handling needs. Our groomers will quote an exact price when we check in your dog and before we start the work. For dogs with fleas we will give a flea bath and an extra charge of $10 will be added to the total bill. We reserve the right to refuse services to aggressive dogs.

FAQ about dogs with double coat

Can you shave a double coated dog?

It is not recommended to shave a double coat. Dogs can develop sores and hot spots due to excessive irritation. It can take up to two years for the coat to fully grow back. 

How often should I get my dog groomed?

Breeds with double coats can go 4 to 6 weeks in between grooming sessions. 

Is there anything I have to do in between groomings?

It is recommended you brush your dog daily or as often as possible to reduce matting. 

What can I do if my dogs hair is matted and it has a double coat?

Matted hair cannot be brushed out and is one a few instances where they would have to be shaved to start the growth over.  

I'm getting allergies, what can I do?

Dander get trapped in the fur, regular scheduled grooming's will reduce dander and allow for a healthy coat. 

Are there any shampoos I can get my dog groomed with to reduce shedding?

Yes, there are specialty shampoos that may be used that are all natural and reduce shedding. Tropiclean is one of the shampoo providers Bohemian Spaw uses in our deshedding grooming's.
